LAT 60: Sixty Years of Drawing Us Together

September 2024 · MONASH BY LAT launch 20 October 2026
exhibition · conversation · collection
RoleCurator; co-lead, EDI Week 2024; member, EDI Committee
VenueLibrary and Learning Commons, Monash University Malaysia

In September 2024, during Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Week, Monash University Malaysia celebrated sixty years of cartoons by Seniman Negara Datuk Mohammad Nor bin Mohd Khalid, known to all as Lat. The sixty years are counted from June 1964, when his first comic book, Tiga Sekawan, was published.

An exhibition of his work opened in the Library and Learning Commons. On 5 September Lat came to campus, spoke with Dr Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai) in front of more than 300 staff, students and guests of all ages, drew at the easel, and signed autographs for a long queue.

The LAT 60 website, designed and edited by Dr Nazirul Hazim as curator, sets out his life in five chapters, Lat’s own words from the conversation, and 137 of his drawings. In the MONASH BY LAT collection Lat drew the word MONASH as six pieces of Malaysia; it launches with The Monash Shop (Malaysia) on Tuesday 20 October 2026, 11am–12.30pm.

Dr Nazirul Hazim was invited to speak at Simposium Harmoni 2026, held by the cross-party parliamentary group on racial and religious harmony with the Office of the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat. Bernama, the national news agency, reported his findings from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia: during elections, reach and engagement rather than authenticity or reliability determine what spreads. He recommended that platforms limit the amplification of harmful content, for example by slowing the sharing of posts beyond a threshold. The research behind the talk was funded by the Monash Incubator, the Monash Data Futures Institute and the European Commission.
