LAT 60: Sixty Years of Drawing Us Together
In September 2024, during Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Week, Monash University Malaysia celebrated sixty years of cartoons by Seniman Negara Datuk Mohammad Nor bin Mohd Khalid, known to all as Lat. The sixty years are counted from June 1964, when his first comic book, Tiga Sekawan, was published.
An exhibition of his work opened in the Library and Learning Commons. On 5 September Lat came to campus, spoke with Dr Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai) in front of more than 300 staff, students and guests of all ages, drew at the easel, and signed autographs for a long queue.
The LAT 60 website, designed and edited by Dr Nazirul Hazim as curator, sets out his life in five chapters, Lat’s own words from the conversation, and 137 of his drawings. In the MONASH BY LAT collection Lat drew the word MONASH as six pieces of Malaysia; it launches with The Monash Shop (Malaysia) on Tuesday 20 October 2026, 11am–12.30pm.

Prizes were sponsored by MKB. The week drew 148 feedback responses; the 104 users of the Explorers or Vector Studio rated interactivity 4.40 out of 5 and informativeness 4.05. The Explorers and a headset station were also shown to prospective students and families at Monash Discovery Day.
